Self-Care 3: Future Self Encouragement

Self-Care #3 – Introduction:

In the journey of life, we often encounter moments of uncertainty and stress. As we navigate through these turbulent times, cultivating a relationship of support and encouragement with our future selves can be a powerful practice. Today, I want to share with you an exercise that focuses on future self-encouragement, a practice rooted in mindfulness and self-compassion.

1. Visualisation:

Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Imagine a specific future scenario where you anticipate a challenge or stress. It could be an upcoming exam, a difficult conversation with a colleague, or even a major life decision. Picture yourself in this situation, feeling the potential pressures and uncertainties. Allow yourself to fully immerse in this imagined moment, noticing the details around youβ€”the environment, the people, and most importantly, your emotions.

Example:

Sarah, a young professional, often found herself anxious about presenting in front of her team. She would visualise standing in the conference room, facing her colleagues, feeling the familiar knots in her stomach. This visualisation helped her acknowledge her feelings and set the stage for the next step in the exercise.

2. Supportive Dialogue:

Now, bring your current self into this future scene. Imagine yourself stepping into this future moment, standing beside your future self. Hear your current self say to the future self, β€œI believe in you. You have the strength, wisdom, and resilience to handle this. Remember, you are not alone.” Speak with kindness and conviction, as you would to a dear friend in need of encouragement.

Example:

During her visualisation, Sarah imagined her present self walking into the room, standing next to her future self at the presentation. She heard herself say, β€œSarah, you’ve prepared well for this. You know your material. Trust in your abilities and know that you’re supported. You’ve got this.”

3. Encouraging Gesture:

To further solidify this supportive interaction, imagine giving your future self a reassuring gesture. It could be a pat on the back, a warm smile, or a gentle touch on the shoulder. Visualise your future self receiving this gesture, feeling uplifted and more confident as a result. This physical act of encouragement can bridge the emotional gap between your current and future selves.

Example:

Sarah visualised her present self giving her future self a comforting hug. She felt the warmth and support flow through her, easing the tension and filling her with a sense of calm and confidence. This simple gesture transformed her anxiety into a manageable and even empowering feeling.

Conclusion:

By regularly practising these stepsβ€”visualisation, supportive dialogue, and encouraging gesturesβ€”you can cultivate a habit of self-compassion and build a nurturing relationship with your future self. This exercise not only prepares you for future challenges but also reinforces a continuous cycle of self-support and resilience. Remember, mindfulness is about being present, but it also involves extending that presence and kindness to all aspects of your life, including your future.

Embrace this practice and witness the transformative power of encouraging your future self. In the words of the Buddha, β€œYou, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” Extend that love to your future self, and let it be a guiding light through the challenges that lie ahead.

Notes on Life and Living Mindfulness:

1. Mindfulness is a Continuous Practice: The more you practice being mindful, the more natural it becomes to extend this awareness to your future self. It’s not about achieving perfection but about making a consistent effort.

2. Self-Compassion is Key: Just as you would be compassionate towards others, be kind to yourself. Recognise that challenges are a part of life, and facing them with a supportive mindset makes a significant difference.

3. Stay Present, Plan for the Future: While it’s crucial to stay present, having a supportive relationship with your future self can help you navigate through life’s uncertainties with greater ease and confidence.

May you find peace and strength in this practice, and may it bring you closer to the serene and resilient self you aspire to be.
