Lesson 1: Waking Up from Automatic Pilot

MFL Lesson 1 Notes

Dear Friends,
As we begin this journey, let us embrace the gentle awakening of our hearts and minds from the rhythm of automatic living. Like the dawn of a new day, every moment offers us a chance to start anew, to live with intention and love.

Home Practice for This Week

Every day, take time to nurture your being:
1. Body Scan Meditation: Gently guide your awareness through your body, noticing and blessing every part.
2. Raisin Practice: Revisit this practice if your heart feels called—it’s a small yet profound reminder of how mindfulness can transform even the simplest things.
3. Mindful Daily Routine: Choose one activity, such as brushing your teeth or washing the dishes, and do it with tender care and attention.
4. 10-Finger Gratitude Practice: Begin and end each day by counting on your fingers ten blessings, no matter how small. This is not just a practice—it is a way of weaving gratitude into the fabric of your life.

Record your reflections in your journal, cherishing the insights and growth that unfold.

The Wandering Mind

The mind is like a little bird, flitting from branch to branch, endlessly curious. Do not scold it for wandering; instead, welcome it back with love. When you notice your mind has strayed, try this simple ritual:
– Pause, like the stillness of a prayer.
– Shrug your shoulders gently, releasing tension.
– Acknowledge your wandering mind with kind and forgiving words.
– Smile, for noticing is itself a gift.
– Thank your mind, as you would a dear friend who has returned home.
– Whisper inwardly words of love: “All is well, come with me.”

This practice is not about controlling the mind but about building a tender relationship with it. Celebrate each return with gratitude and kindness, knowing that even the smallest steps lead to profound change.

Turning Tasks into Joyful Practice

Gratitude and Appreciation
Gratitude is a seed that, when watered, blooms into joy. Yet, some may find it challenging to practice, particularly if independence or hardship has shaped their journey. If this resonates with you, know that gratitude need not always involve another person. You can simply feel it for the beauty of life—a soft breeze, the warmth of sunlight, or the peace of a quiet moment.

Research tells us that gratitude—even for things—can deepen our spiritual connection and open our hearts to generosity. Start where you are, and let this sense of thankfulness be a light in your day.

Turning Tasks into Joyful Practice

Even in mundane tasks, there is an opportunity to meet the sacred. When you encounter resistance to a chore, notice your thoughts. Observe how the mind protests and marvel at its ingenuity. Then, gently guide your attention to the act itself—the soapy water on your hands, the rhythmic motion of sweeping, the sound of the broom. Every task, no matter how small, can be an offering of presence.

May this week’s practices remind you that each moment is a gift, waiting to be unwrapped with care and compassion. Let us journey together, step by step, into a life full of mindful awareness and love.

Reclaiming Life

. -by Per Norrgren

Oh, dear child,
How fleeting are the moments we let slip away,
Lost in the haze of endless doing,
Living, yet never truly alive.

Each breath, a gift unopened,
Each step, a chance unnoticed,
Each glance, a window to the world ignored,
As we wander the paths of autopilot, blind to their beauty.

The clock ticks not to chastise but to remind,
That this life is not infinite,
That each heartbeat is a prayer unanswered
When we fail to pause, to see, to feel.

But fear not, for hope abides in the quiet,
In the gentle return of awareness,
In the grace of mindfulness,
That bids us awaken to life’s sacred rhythm.

Oh, the taste of a moment lived fully!
The sunlight dancing on a trembling leaf,
The whisper of wind on weary skin,
The warmth of connection in a fleeting smile.

Mindfulness is the hand that gathers
The scattered pieces of our days,
The soft voice that calls us home
To the life we were meant to live.

So, let us waste no more, dear one.
Let us breathe with purpose,
Walk with love, and
Live with the fullness of our hearts.

For to live mindfully is to reclaim,
And to reclaim is to truly live.
